Corrib Riding Club

Hat trick of wins for Corrib Tuesday, 15 July 2008
Corrib Riding Club pulled off a hat trick of wins at the Mount Juliet Conrad Show Jumping Championships at Mullingar Equestrian Centre last Sunday [13th July 2008] with three of the six titles going west.

The Galway based club notched up wins in the open, advanced intermediate and intermediate divisions at the Westmeath venue where conditions were perfect throughout the day.

David Glynn claimed the first title for the Corrib club winning the Mount Juliet Conrad Juliet Open Championship where only two riders made it through to the jump-off over Tony Ennis’s track.

Glynn was first out over the reduced track on his borrowed horse, Allie Fairfield, as his own horse picked up an injury leading up to the event.  This didn’t deter the Athlone man as he crossed the finish line clear in a time of 36.55.

Next in, Greenhills member Grainne Alexander who’s no stranger to pressure, set off at a blistering pace on Orman.  The Kildare based rider stormed across the finish line over four seconds clear of Glynn’s time but disaster struck at the final jump as Orman clipped the top pole to leave Glynn the winner.  Kilrainy’s Aisling Carter finished quickest of the four faulters to take the yellow ribbon for the Kilrainy club.

Of the sixty three riders in the Mount Juliet Conrad Advanced Intermediate Championship, 20 went through to the afternoon final where nearly half the field went through to the jump off.

The opening jump caught many napping as Anthony Byrne (Ballygraddy Alan), Anthony Gillespie (TraDhearg Setanta), Marie Crosse (Serendipity) and Claire Nulty (Anamcara) all fell foul there.

Only two riders cleared the course, second in, Gary Higgins set the target of 29.63 on WCE Irish for the Corrib club.  His time proved unbeatable as, second last to jump, Coolbells Kevin Veale crossed just short of the time on Coolbell Brady as the clock stopped on 30.01 to slot the Dungarvan based rider in second place ahead of Calliaghstown Anthony Byrne in third.

Competition in the Mount Juliet Conrad Intermediate division was razor sharp with 117 entering.  Of these, 29 of these qualified for the afternoon final where ten went forward to the jump off.

Pathfinder Ciaran Lynch steered Ballin Clover with precision over the reduced track to set, what proved to be an unbeatable target of 29.08 as the Galway rider crossed the line clear and with it winning a remarkable third title for the Corrib club.

Dorsey’s Orla Finnegan nearly matched the time as Far Away Field stopped the clock on 29.79 to take second ahead of Lynch’s clubmate Jean O’Connor in third place on 30.20.

The Mount Juliet Conrad Advanced Primary championship also attracted a large entry with just under 100 riders taking part.  Time proved influential in this highly competitive division as less than a second separated the top four riders.  Kilrainy’s Emer Eyres claimed the spoils as Midnight Lily finished just 0.14 short of the target.  The Kilrainy rider was thrilled with her win making up for last years third placing overall.  Riverside’s Regina Quinn claimed the blue ribbon for the second year running as Rosie Rebel crossed the line o.18 off the target.

Michelle Lynch won the Mount Juliet Conrad Primary title for the Cheval club.  Lynch who was last to jump, crossed the line clear in a time of 38.11.  South Roscommon’s Tony Carr picked up the blue ribbon on Glor na hAbhann.

Meanwhile the Advanced Open title went to Kieran Cahill on Oakpark Highflyer as the Carlow based rider jumped the only double clear to win the title for the Barrow Valley club.

Corrib chairman Shane Small said shortly afterwards, “ It’ll take some time for this to sink in, I don’t think it’s hit anyone yet but we’ll be planning a night on the tear fairly soon to celebrate.”

He added, “It’s been a tough year so far but this has been a fantastic result for the club, out of the three championships the club entered, we won three titles, absolutely fantastic.”
